Jérôme Bel. Cédric Andrieux

Programmed within the series  Reactivate/reinterpret , the piece contains fragments of movements and gestures by Trisha Brown, Merce Cunningham and Jérôme Bel himself, in a study of the grammar of contemporary dance blended with the biographical narrative of the dancer. The body as an archive and the actual telling of a story to the audience are what make up this generational, subjective history of dance.

Based in Paris, Jérôme Bel (1964) is a dancer and choreographer and one of the most well-known representatives of the non-dance movement. His pieces, which are of a conceptual nature, move between the theatrical, the verbal and the ordinary. The body is understood to be ready-made and it incorporates a register of movements that define the subject.  The only way to learn dance, he writes, is by reading dance history and philosophy at the same time . After working with various choreographers in France and Italy, he created his first piece in 1994,  Nom donné par l'auteur , which features interaction between mundane objects and dancers.  Jérôme Bel (1995),  Shirtologie  (1997),  Le dernier spectacle (1998),  The show must go on (2001),  Véronique Doisneau (2004) and  Lutz Förster (2009) are other works within the project that, by rethinking dance, modifies its limits.
