Inside the framework of Madrid Otra Mirada (Another View of Madrid), the Museo Reina Sofía’s Library and Documentation Centre Department and its Architecture, Sustainable Development and General Services Area put forward two events which look to approach and delve deeper into knowledge around the institution’s rich cultural heritage. On one side, the programme seeks to take us back to its past and examine other “Reina Sofías” that could have taken shape and, on the other, undertakes an analysis of the historical evolution of its buildings by way of plans, photographs and scale models.

Tour Around the Museo Reina Sofía

The Library and Documentation Centre organise a tour through different spaces in the Museo via documents conserved in the institution’s Central Archive. As a whole, the visit facilitates an in situ evaluation of the spatial and functional development of some of the buildings that make up the Museo, in addition to shining a light on the impact certain architectural and urban planning decisions taken in the past have had on the civic environment.

This tour contributes to offering new perspectives on common areas, giving thought to little-known places and spotlighting different projects in which the Museo is currently immersed.

The visit concludes in one of the collections of the Central Archive, where its team demonstrate the roles, aims and services of this documentary centre and a selection of materials related to the Museo’s architecture which are able to reconstruct part — partial and incomplete yet also exciting and unknown — of the institution’s history.

A Digital Reconstruction of Madrid’s Old General Hospital

Madrid’s old General Hospital, today the site of the Museo Reina Sofía, can be considered an unfinished project since the initial building proposed in the era of Fernando VI was left half-finished owing to a lack of financial resources. It was a work of great ambition and architectural modernity and, upon completion, would have been one of the biggest hospitals in Europe at the time and would have changed our understanding of the urban-planning context of Madrid.

The Museo’s Architecture, Sustainable Development and General Services Area organises a lecture to exhibit a digital reconstruction of how this monumental project would have turned out. A recreation that stems from observations of the original plans and a study of the institution’s historical, social and architectural context to offer an interesting alternative to the Museo Reina Sofía we know today.
