The Knowledge Machine
A Wikipedia Workshop on Concepts from the machinations Exhibition
This workshop, drawing from the machinations exhibition, creates and improves Wikipedia entries related to the show’s focal points — War Machines, Schizo Machines, Cinema Machines of Care — and some of the concepts related to works by the artists involved: the crisis of representation, micropolitics, deep ecology, social machines and cyborgs, among others. The aim is to reconsider the importance of knowledge and reflect on local reappropriation; namely, the changes brought about by the reciprocal influence of objects and cultures.
Are mobile apps machines of desire? And what about the Instagram filter, TikTok choreography and the voice message that replaces a phone call? The approach of this activity entails thinking about Wikipedia as a knowledge machine and processes of collaborative construction which allow the interaction of objects with operative gestures, thereby reflecting on its social, normative and emancipatory commitment. The key to Wikipedia, the knowledge machine, is not separation but links, co-existence and collective construction.
