Serigne Mbayé in the documentary Serigne vs the EU, 2022
Serigne Mbayé, a fisherman, was forced to migrate from Senegal after being unable to ply his trade due to overfishing by European vessels. As a Madrid resident for over a decade, he participates as an activist in the anti-racist struggle in Spain, denouncing, for a number of years through the Sindicato de Manteros (Union of Street Vendors), police persecution, the Immigration Law and racial discrimination before becoming a regional representative in the Assembly of Madrid in 2021.
The medium-length documentary Serigne vs the EU (2022) tells his story: a migrant fisherman who uses his own life experiences to shed light on Europe’s abusive fishing policies in African waters and the fight against institutional xenophobia before political leaders at the heart of the European Union.
On Monday, 18 December, International Migrants Day, the Sindicato de Manteros joins the Museo Situado assembly to organise the screening of this documentary, made by the audiovisual social cooperative Zungu Coop. It is followed by a debate between Malick Gueye (a spokesperson for Sindicato de Manteros), Thimbo Samb (actor, YouTuber and activist) and Zungu Coop members Adriana Cardoso, Rodrigo Hernández and Edu Marín.
