In conjunction with the film series The Eye in Matter. Dziga Vertov and Early Soviet Cinema, organised by the Museo Reina Sofía in collaboration with Filmoteca Española, the artist and film-maker Peter Kubelka will conduct a workshop on filmic creation, centred on debate and experimentation. The workshop will see Kubelka present and debate his work with the audience.

Peter Kubelka (Vienna, 1934) is a capital figure in experimental and independent cinema, his work spanning not only film production, but also architecture, spatial design, theory, collecting, programming, and the founding of pre-eminent institutions such as the Anthology Film Archives in New York and Vienna’s Austrian Film Museum (OeFM). Kubelka’s artistic investigations, clustered in a brilliant body of work barely lasting an hour in total, profoundly examine the intrinsic qualities of film, while his reflections on materiality, duration and projection interweave with compositional issues stemming from mathematical and structuralist notions. His most recent work, Monument Film (2016), spotlights his fifty-year career by looking at the idea of the disappearance of cinema as medium and experience to make way for the ubiquitous digital media so widely extolled and promoted by the film industry.

Within the framework of this retrospective on Vertov, Kubelka will also present Session 21 around the screening of Entuziazm: Simfoniya Donbassa (Enthusiasm: The Symphony of Donbass, 1930), restored by Kubelka himself and drawing on structuralism and abstract editing. Moreover, this focus gave rise to a new reading of the Soviet avant-garde among artists and film-makers in the 1970s.
