Documentos 2. Zines of the Zone
Encounter
The second activity in the programme Documentos, which revolves around themes related to the Museo Reina Sofía Documentation Centre, is Zines of the Zone: a “nomadic library” bringing together some 1,500 fanzines, photobooks and self-edited photo-zines which all share the use of photography.
Since January 2014, the collection Zines of the Zone, which surfaced in France, has travelled around Europe, holding brief shows, concerts and talks to put forward forms of alternative exhibitions. It aims to make DIY practices known among artists from different backgrounds and audiences with an interest, as well as facilitate access to publications with often limited editions that swiftly run out.
Beyond solely incorporating photography, photobooks, fanzines and photo-zines offer a reflection on the physical qualities of the object-book as an artistic medium, and their rise over the past fifteen years has meant a reconsideration of the channels of dissemination and circulation. Within this framework, Zines of the Zone came into being with the intention of becoming a public, open and accessible collection that grants visibility to these practices and ensures their enjoyment.
Zines of the Zone invites local artists and editors to enrich the collection with their proposals for photozines and photobooks.
On Friday November 11 at 6:00 pm there will be a meeting with the curators in the exhibition space.
