Siurana, el camí (Siurana, the Path) is from the period of Miró’s career between 1907 and 1918, generally considered to be the time of the artist’s formation, when he frequented the Llotja and Francisco Galí art academies, both in Barcelona, and had the chance to see the most avant-garde examples of the plastic arts at exhibitions like those at the Dalmau galleries in 1912.
By 1916, Joan Miró was painting landscapes of the villages of Montroig, Cambrils, Siurana and Prades, where he had moved in order to find new plastic solutions. At that time, and up until 1918, Miró’s output was what he himself called Fauve, because of its bold colours. Siurana, el camí falls within this period of the painter’s work, and is one of his key pieces. The oil painting combines Fauvist traces, as mentioned, with the influence of Paul Cézanne and lessons from Cubism, all of which is indicative of the artist’s search for his own personal pictorial language.
