New Realisms: 1957-1962

Object strategies between readymade and spectacle

A plurality of artistic proposals emerged as alternatives to the predominant painting during the period examined in the exhibition. To both sides of the Atlantic different artists and groups rehearsed new artistic strategies around the object, announcing the shift of paradigm from the sixties. Curator Julia Robinson is the author of the main text, analysing the period from the axiom ‘Before the Attitudes became Form’, while the rest of the essays dive into aspects like the new role of word, action and object, or case studies like the School of Niza, Pierre Restany’s role and his configuration of Nouveau Réalisme.
